Consider the underlying indication
Chlorpheniramine is not required for every patient with nasal symptoms or cough.
Nasal saline drops / spray
Useful when nasal congestion or thick nasal secretions are the predominant symptoms.
Honey for cough
For children older than 1 year, honey may be used as a simple soothing option for cough.
Less-sedating antihistamine
For allergic rhinitis or urticaria, a second-generation antihistamine such as cetirizine may be more appropriate when clinically indicated.
Airway clearance
Consider chest physiotherapy when there are significant retained lower-airway secretions and the patient is having difficulty clearing sputum.
